HISTORY
The harp is lovely instrument, and harpers can be quite lovely themselves. April's father, Darrel, found this out himself while he was serving as a knight in Hanalan's court. April's mother, Nadeen, then managed to rise in popularity over the following two years. Slowly, with the growth of her family, her musical style changed. Instead of playing charming music, she began writing about issues that didn't involve love. While April grew up, she watched the slow descent of her mother's fame.
Finally, when she was six, she heard the story of her mother's final day in the court secondhand. She was being heckled by one particular former fan, like she had been for years. It wasn't overt, but the annoyance had been building for some time. Everyone knew there was going to be drama one way or another. Six year old April heard of her mother beautifully slipping a few four-letter words into a song that described this former fan's life quite adequately. She learned of this waiting in the carriage for her mother as two of the court's ladies walked by. She suddenly learned just how bad some words can make your stomach feel.
Life at home became infinitely more complicated for a girl whose mother had previously not had a lot of time. Her mother refused to face the court again after such a display. A bitter mother making sure that all of your studies are done ahead of schedule is one thing. A bitter mother whose job it becomes to teach you how to rise to the top of the courtly food chain is another. April soon learned that a bit of a feud had formed between her family and the family of the man her mother gave up her position at court to embarrass. It turned out that her entire childhood would only teach her three important things; how to play the harpsichord well; the line where it became impossible to remain in polite society; the power gossip and drama have over people who want to believe what you're saying.
Finally, her day to shine came. Her father watched as she began playing the song that ushered her mother onto the greatest stage in the kingdom, albeit 'kicked up a notch' as the street children would say. She was definitely in on talent. She pushed herself rather confidently into a circle of women to test herself on the social aspect. As she stayed quiet, politely waiting for her chance to speak, she heard that her rival from the other family had managed to bomb his entrance to the court by showing up drunk. Her father hadn't mentioned it before, hoping April would try to succeed in gaining the fame her mother had squandered.
He was right.
Her mother, appeased with the news, suddenly withdrew herself. April was left with all the skill, all the excitement of perpetuating conflict, and no way to vent it at all. It was fortunate enough for her that the court proved itself interesting enough to fulfill her in her perpetual boredom. Even if she has to make her own fun, it is better than having no fun at all.
PERSONALITY
Unwilling to live in boredom, she often throws herself headlong into other people's business. And, of course, since that is sometimes (several times) not interesting enough, she feels compelled to amplify things until they sound interesting when she repeats it to other people. She only has their best interests in mind. Or, well, her own best interests in mind. She pushes the bounds of modesty, and sometimes decency. Fortunately for her, she knows where to draw the line where her mother didn't.
She is a dabbler in the interesting. She has learned to ride. She has learned archery. Neither of these actually took because she was outclassed quite easily. She doesn't throw herself wholeheartedly into things she can't win. She shows up expecting to lose, and only for the chance to play the metagame. After all, to her the metagame is more fun than the game itself. Because she sucks at the game most of the time. She is very good at psyching the weaker minded girls out on the archery field though.
She tries to be older than she is. She regularly fails in this task, but she thinks of herself as a mature young woman when she doesn't have the best grasp of what that really means. She's growing into it, there is no doubt about that. Still, there are many occassions when it shows that she is still a teenager at heart.
The most weird part of her is that despite being in over her head, she is still genuinely happy. There is no end to the joy she feels when her gossip comes full circle with the person informing her that it comes from a reputable source. She is high on life when she nails the performance of a song that people have been asking for. She loves attention. She eats it like the delicious cake that it is.
APPEARANCE
Poise and posture were the cornerstone of her education. Being able to play the harpsichord at court would have been for nothing if she couldn't look good playing it. She has been trained in performance. More than that, she just has a natural sense of it. She knows how to move. If she were more lithe, she would have taken up dancing as well.
April's primary escape from boredom in the past left her with a round physique that she has made no effort to change. She's ceased putting on anymore weight with her life now less boring, but she refuses to stop indulging herself with the finest foods the court offers. The fortunate lack of heavily refined sugar existing in Eire has prevented morbidity in her size.
She has brown hair and eyes, and both of them have a bit of a reddish tint to them, but not enough to be noticed without close observation. She manages to keep on top of fashion well enough, but she often wears the ones on the more modest end. There are some beauty marks that just shouldn't be seen until the third week of the courtship in her opinion.
[April is PB'd by Arima Senne from the artist Kashiwamochi Yomogi who does totally excellent work, and is definitely not a hentai artist. What. Shut up. >_>;]
